Week 4-SAMR Model
I am a librarian
but have instructional classes at a local community college. My area of focus
is generally library instruction, meaning teaching students how to use the
resources of the library to help them throughout their academic career. I also
teach specialized classes dealing with research, technology basics and
advancement, citation, and various other things. I try as often as possible to
implement various forms of technology into my instruction. Using the SAMR model listed below are a few things that I've already done with students and many things that I now plan to do in the near future.
Substitution: When dealing on the substitution level, I
could and have used eBooks to have reading groups and/or books clubs. In this case students are
using the new technology of eBooks to replace paper books. Another example is
that I could use Google Docs to replace Microsoft Word.
Augmentation: On this level of Augmentation, still
dealing with eBooks, the basic functions of eBooks can be used such as Read to Me
and dictionary definition. And when using Augmentation as it relates to Google
docs, instead of writing a document and saving it in order to share it with
others, with Google Docs students can use auto saving, auto syncing, and auto
sharing in the cloud.
Modification: On this level I’ve tried using the camera
function in order for students to be able to record readings. On this level as
it relates to Google Docs students can use the commenting service to do
things like collaborate and share feedback on a task..
Redefinition: On the last level students can use iBooks
Author to create media rich ePub books. And as far as this level as it relates
to Google Docs students can use shared Google documents for notetaking either
during the sessions or to use in their
regular classrooms, this is especially good for students as a review for
exams.
I really enjoyed your post. Some of the items your mentioned sound really unique and I am definitely going to try some out in my class. Having students read eBooks sounds simple but fascinating. Why not read it on the computer? Kids need to change up their routines and I think that is a wonderful idea. Can you explain iBooks author it sounds really exciting.

DeleteThanks....I think it's important to keep kids or people in general reading. eBooks are a good way to do just that. As far as the Ibooks author its free on the Mac App Store, Its an amazing app that allows anyone to create iBooks with just about any kind of book — it has galleries, video, interactive diagrams, 3D objects, mathematical expressions....
Hi Tracie, Yes, it is interesting listening to someone else's perspective who has a different type of job. I'm looking at your Augmentation, and find that you are using it similar to how I do in working with my students. I was very pleased to find that our new reading program had a nice online capability, and the kids really love using it. I look forward to really moving more fully to the level Redefinition, as we are starting, but not there yet.

DeleteI think it's important for teachers to begin using eBooks and other forms of technology that still allows and encourages student's to learn and read. It goes back to my saying that we have to meet students where they are and if technology is where they are we must get more interactive with it in order for them to learn.
One thing to think about: reading on the screen vs. paper. This can be a 'generational' change, as many of us grew up reading paper. With that said, a screen vs. paper reading on its own is an "S" change. What can make it an "R"?
ReplyDeleteI like your thoughts on how you would implement the Redefinition part of the model. Not only could you use Google Documents for students keeping notes strictly for hemselves, but also for students to share their notes with those who are unable to take their own (thorough and/or complete) notes. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteHello Tracie,
ReplyDeleteMy wife is a librarian as well, she would like to get back doing that job as her position was cut five years ago. What you said about helping the students and staff is true for instructors like you and my wife, you are the go between the new technology and the school. With your research and knowledge we are taught what is out there to use. Thank You for your great support in helping us in the classroom to develop and improve your curriculum.
Tracie, one side note before I begin, I am totally going to ask you to explain to me the APA writting and citing. I am currently involved in another course and it is heavy with that and I simply don't get it:) Anyway, I love the idea of the Read to Me function. This would help differentiate between academic levels and grades quite readily. As far as Google Docs, I think that set up is wonderful for collaboration.
